InterAction
INTERACT'S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM

In addition to its mainstage season, InterAct also uses theatre to promote positive social change in schools and community at large by reaching individuals through our InterAction program.

WHAT ARE InterAction RESIDENCIES?

Students at Visitation BVM

InterAction is a school and community-based program utilizing the discipline of theater and concentrating on the empowering qualities of the creative process. Using acting and writing skills as its core, InterAction promotes emotional competence and regulation, and encourages reflective thinking instead of impulsive action among its participants. InterAction is a six-time nominee and three-time recipient of the Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service, as well as the Philadelphia Commission on Crime and Delinquency's 1999 Human Rights Award for Arts and Culture.

  • Residencies and Workshops for Youth

InterAction helps young people grapple with difficult issues in a safe and constructive environment. We are committed to reaching out to young people in general, especially "at-risk" youth. The residencies stimulate dialogue about vital issues that many young people face in their daily lives, such as trusting authority, peer pressure, drugs, violence, the influence of pop culture and the media, prejudice and stereotyping, communication and understanding, intolerance, group dynamics, social responsibility, homophobia, and sexual issues.

HOW RESIDENCIES WORK

Students at De LaSalle

InterAction residencies involve five elements:

  • Performance of provocative and entertaining monologues and scenes by InterAction teaching artists.
  • Discussion addressing the ideas and issues raised by the performance.
  • Theatre Exercises to teach the students introductory acting and writing techniques as well as how to collaborate as a group.
  • Role-Playing/Improvisation activities to help students internalize a deeper understanding of the ideas and issues as they apply to real life and real people.
  • Rehearsal/Performance of a script created by the ensemble.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS

2007 Norris Square Project: A Collaboration with Art-Reach and Mural Arts Program

During the 2007/2008 Season, InterAction will be embarking on two new programs in collaborations with the Mural Arts Programs.

1) The first project involves six weeks of theatre workshops with teenagers and police officers in an Anti-Violence Reduction Partnership after school program. The students and officers will write and perform monologues and spoken-word pieces addressing issues near to their hearts which they will then perform at the culminating event.

2) Next, we will create a play inspired by interviews with inmates at a Philadelphia prison. The play will then be performed by professional actors both at the prison and at InterAct.

Other upcoming residencies include:

  • De Lasalle in Towne
  • Visitation B.V.M. Esau Afterschool Program
  • Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls
  • St. Vincent's Mother/Baby Home
