Simpatico Theatre presents TROUBLE IN KIND by Caridad Svich

Simpatico Theatre presents SvichFest! Three readings from the RED BIKE play cycle by Caridad Svich.

Running June 6-24th, Simpatico Theatre's production of the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of RED BIKE, by Caridad Svich is the first play in a cycle of plays that dig deep into the emotional map of America. Three of the five plays will be read as part of InterAct's Juneapalooza.

TROUBLE IN KIND - Tuesday June 19th, 7pm
I'm A, I'm a Nother and I'm a Nother Other live in a small town on the edge of the bayou. In the aftermath of a hate crime, they all seek to re-make their lives. It's gonna take a ritual, a visiting deity and a ghostly encounter at the cross-roads to stir up the waters of progress once again. An incantation play for troubled times inflected with the timbre of tripped-out zydeco blues. This is the fifth play In the RED BIKE cycle of plays.

Reading: THE LEGEND OF DON Q by Jason Lindner

Who can forget the the theme song, and the radio serial, the long-running TV show, the action figures, the lunch box, his haunting call of "Hee-Yaw" that had all his enemies quaking in their boots?  Yeah. That was when America really meant something. This modern retelling of Cervantes Don Quixote, has the iconic character trade in his lance for a pair of six-guns and embark on a quest to reclaim the American Dream with extreme prejudice.

Written by Jason Lindner

Directed by Cat Ramirez

Salt Pepper Ketchup

PREVIEW

A World Premiere by local playwright Josh Wilder

Co-Production with Passage Theatre of Trenton

A layer of bulletproof glass won't protect Superstar Chinese Take-out owners from the gentrification consuming the Point Breeze neighborhood in South Philly. When a trendy food co-op opens nearby, the Wu's and their customers initially see it as a hipster annoyance, but as tensions mount they begin to recognize the intrusion as an act of war. Tinged with genuine humor and pathos, Wilder's play examines the very human consequences of neighborhood redevelopment - who benefits and who gets chewed up and spit out?

Hype Man: A Break Beat Play

PERFORMANCE

by Idris Goodwin

Hype man Verb has been backing up front-man rapper Pinnacle since they were kids. Adding beatmaker Peep One to their group sparked a flame and now the interracial trio is flexing serious Hip-Hop muscle. But when an unarmed black teenager is shot by police, it forces the group to navigate issues of friendship and race. The latest from break beat poet and playwright and Idris Goodwin (HOW WE GOT ON) HYPE MAN asks: what does it mean to be an ally, and who has the responsibility to speak up in the face of social injustice?

PREVIEW

An InterAct Commission & NNPN Rolling World Premiere by Gabriel Jason Dean

Dr. Harold Banks, an aging professor of Literature and Afghan Studies in Nebraska, is reeling after his adopted daughter Getee is killed by the Taliban while teaching children outside Kabul. When Afghan refugee Nazrullah arrives at his door with an incredible story and carrying Getee's prized books, the two men form an unlikely bond. Each is searching for his own brand of forgiveness, but as their friendship develops Naz accidentally exposes an unexpected source of Dr.Banks' guilt. How might a CIA propaganda operation over 30 years ago have contributed to Getee's death? Inspired by true events, HEARTLAND is a story of healing, connection, and the devastating unintentional consequences of our actions.

The Great Leap

PREVIEW

By Lauren Yee

It's San Francisco 1989 and Manfred Lum, renowned for his basketball hustle in Chinatown, tries to talk his way on to a college team destined for a "friendship" game in China. Coach Saul blocks him hard, but Manfred rebounds and launches himself on a journey to a homeland he's never known. Bouncing between Beijing and San Francisco, between 1989 and 1971, this clever and relentless play looks at America's arms-length relationship with Communist China and the post-Cultural Revolution through a story about two generations of basketball players. Smart, funny, and heart-pumping, Lauren Yee's THE GREAT LEAP will have you on your feet for the final buzzer.

Reading: A STRING BETWEEN MAN AND THE WORLD by Paige Zubel

InterAct 2017-18 Apprentice Paige Zubel presents A STRING BETWEEN MAN AND THE WORLD

Miles Alloway, a patient in a mental health facility, appeals for his release to an unseen panel of doctors. He claims his admittance was all one giant misunderstanding. His story of how he came to be there grows wilder and wilder, from timelines that don't add up, to government conspiracy theories, to a revelation on God himself. Ultimately, unbelieved, Miles breaks. We're left to decide for ourselves if he really is insane or if maybe--just maybe--everything he said could be true.

Azuka Theatre presents SHIP by Douglas Williams

Nell Shemely might have lucked into her job at the local seaport museum's ticketing center, but she's already over this lame shit. Not only is it boring as hell, but the blacksmith won't let her mess with his tools and her boss doesn't think she's "tour guide" material.

Truth be told, Nell has only one true passion -- The Guinness Book of World Records. So when rumors spread that the man who tried (and failed) to grow the world's longest fingernails has moved to Nell's sleepy hometown, she becomes obsessed with tracking him down.

A new play about redemption and recovery.

InterAct Theatre Company presents STEAL HER BONES by Thomas Gibbons

The newest play from the writer of PERMANENT COLLECTION.

Diana Goodwin, a renowned evolutionary biologist, is also an outspoken atheist, publicly debating evangelists about the age of the Earth and intelligent design. When she is diagnosed with cancer, she is forced to cancel a debate with Martin Banks, a theologian. Several weeks after her death, Banks publishes an article entitled "Diana Goodwin's Final Debate," revealing that Diana had invited him to her house to hold their debate privately, and on the basis of her words he believes that she came to accept the existence of God. A bitter public battle erupts over Diana’s memory, and her partner Ellen, a reclusive artist, faces a choice—grieve in silence or confront Banks over what she sees as a fraudulent misrepresentation of Diana’s final days. As the play moves between the present and Martin and Diana's encounter, STEAL HER BONES dramatizes the clash between reason and faith, contrasting interpretations of memory, and explores a deeper mystery: Is it possible to truly know the person we most love?
