InterAct Theatre Company Announces 2007/2008 Main Stage Season

Introducing InterAct Theatre Company's 20th Anniversary Season
The 2007/2008 Season: Past, Present, Future...

Over the last nineteen seasons we've introduced Philadelphia audiences to dozens of new writers and scores of new ideas. Our plays have taken audiences to a world of diverse cultures -- from Central Africa to the Soviet Union to Germany to Egypt to Turkey to Bosnia to Central America to London to Morocco. They have explored the most important issues of the past two decades - from presidential politics to the fall of communism, from genetic engineering to the rise of terrorism, from Christian fundamentalism to American consumerism, from AIDS to genocide, from race relations to war. As we approach this 20th anniversary milestone, we thought it would be only fitting to examine the past, present and future through the eyes of four contemporary playwrights. I hope you will join us in celebrating our 20th season by takingthis provocative and entertaining journey through time.

Don't just sit there. Help change the world ... one play at a time. Become an InterActivist.

LAST OF THE BOYS
Written by Steven Dietz
Directed by Paul Meshejian

Setting the Stage:
With increasing frequency Americans are comparing the war in Iraq to the Vietnam War. Media reports and casual conversations across the country are filled with phrases like "noble cause," "mistaken war," "lack of preparation," "support our troops," and "no exit strategy." A new generation of veterans are streaming back from Iraq, carrying with them the physical injuries and the psychological scars of a conflict that has divided America and much of the world. Often forgotten or left behind, our veterans understand better than anyone the real prices of war and the lessons we should learn.

About the Play:
Ben and Jeeter have been meeting once every year at Ben's trailer park since returning from the jungles of Vietnam. Jeeter suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, while Ben is haunted by the ghost of a fallen soldier and the lingering betrayal by his boyhood hero Robert McNamara. When Jeeter's young and unpredictable new girlfriend arrives on the scene with her opinionated mother in-tow, time-tested rituals give way to a fountain of conflicts, confessions and self-discoveries.

The World Premiere of
BLACK GOLD
Written & Directed by Seth Rozin

Setting the Stage:
Our lower classes and inner cities continue to be largely ignored by the Federal government, even in the wake of unprecedented tragedies like hurricane Katrina. In our superpower economy, driven largely by our investment in Middle-Eastern oil, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. But the world's oil supply will be peaking sometime in the next twenty years, and our government offers little more than periodic lip service toward the development of alternative energy sources.

About the Play:
What happens when an African American man living in Detroit's inner-city strikes oil in his back yard? Will newly-tapped resources lead to prosperity or violence? Will the poor get rich? Will the rich get richer? Will America's economy skyrocket or spiral downward? And what will happen in the ever-volatile Middle East? Six actors play over eighty roles in this fast-paced, futuristic satire of class, race, greed and America's insatiable appetite for oil.

The Philadelphia Premiere of
FROZEN
Written by Bryony Lavery
"A major play . . . Thrilling, humane, and timely."
-- The Times of London

Setting the Stage:
Reported cases of child sexual offenses in the United States have sharply risen over the past 20 years. Consequently, child sex offenses are being paid more attention than ever in both law enforcement and the media. Through the popular television series Law & Order SVU (Special Victims Unit) alone Americans have become more familiar with this frighteningly prevalent underside of our culture. Greater awareness of this growing problem has led to new laws being passed, new family support organizations being formed, and new science being pursued into the mind of sexual predators.

About the Play:
Is it possible to forgive that which seems unforgivable -- the abduction, presumed sexual assault, and murder of one's child? And if so, what effect could that forgiveness have on the mother as well as the killer? These are the searing questions at the heart of FROZEN, which follows with the coming together of the mother, the killer, and a psychiatrist 25 years after the crime, and their journeys toward self-awareness and understanding.

The World Premiere of
HOUSE, DIVIDED
Written by Larry Loebell
Directed by Seth Rozin

Setting the Stage:
For half a century the United States and Israel have been tied to each other -- politically, strategically, economically, and through thousands of Jewish families with members living in both countries. Israel, situated in the middle of the Arab world, has been a major source of conflict and controversy among its Middle-Eastern neighbors, especially for the Palestinian people. And Israel's eternally precarious position and sometimes provocative military actions have also divided American Jews; many anti-war liberals have become increasingly critical while more Zionist-leaning conservatives have been unwavering in their support of the Jewish State.

About the Play:
A Jewish American family in Philadelphia is torn apart when one of two brothers decides to embrace Jewish orthodoxy and move to Israel during the height of the Vietnam war. Thirty years later, one is a retired officer of the Israeli army and the other is a senior director of Amnesty International. Divided by deep familial wounds and opposing religious and political beliefs, they are forced to re-engage one another when their sons make surprising life decisions of their own.
